MATCH REPORT

By Ian Caren

Spurs 0 v Everton 1

My mum's scarf!

I've been thinking about the Spurs Everton game since our disastrous defeat to Wigan. Jeez how could we lose there, that's 3 points thrown away.

Now we have Spurs, why couldn't we have played them under Ramos, not now with 7 victories out of 9. I'm very pessimistic. I fancy they'll win 3-1.

I was there when they beat us 5-2 in our glorious fourth season.

I thought I'd cheer myself up by wearing the scarf my Mum bought me in 1977 "Everton are magic" it says. In those days scarves were about the only accessory available. I remember at Junior School in Huyton, a kid had turned up in a blue shirt with white cuffs and collar. We were all so envious. The scarf my mum got me was bought at the market. It had been washed so many times it's now only about 2 feet long! It's been to magical moments, the 3-1 victory against Rapid Vienna to the bad moments losing 3-2 to Villa in the second replay at Old Trafford, when Terry Darracott didn't kick the ball into touch.

Off to White Hart Lane, I kind of like Spurs, so much money and so badly wasted. If anyone should be able to break into the top four it should be them. One decent manager should have been able to do it.

The game, I'm pleased Everton are playing a 4-5-1. I think this is Everton best formation. However I am worried about an early goal, I'm not sure Everton have that mental toughness for a fight back.

The opening minutes are fairly even each side knocking the ball about. Spurs seem tentative and Everton begin to knock the ball about. Ball goes up and the Yak jumps and falls, nothing too serious it seems. The Yak hobbles about and then wanders off the pitch, suddenly they sign that the need the sub on. Cue Saha, not a bad sub to be honest, someone who could, if he remains fit make a huge difference to Everton. He reminds me of a classic old centre forward good in the air and on the ground.

The midfield look good, Arteta seems happier in the middle but to me the most important player is Pienaar. We look balanced and Lescott can come forward knowing he has cover. The centre three of Fellaini, Arteta and Cahill run, tackle and harry. We're looking good we have a couple of brilliant chances. Cross from Fellaini to Saha and a header straight at the goal keeper, any were else and it's a goal. Then the ball breaks to Fellaini on the edge of the box, he smashes it straight at Gomes who can't hold the ball but manages to grab it at the second attempt. If the Yak had been there he would have got the rebound and it would have been 1-0. Overall Everton are in control Spurs never really threatened and from our angle most of the shots Tim deals with easily.

Second half and I'm worried that we have not taken advantage of our control of the game. We should be at least one nil up. Spurs still seem unfocused Everton are knocking the ball around reasonably well. Free kick out side the box, a quick knock forward by Arteta and Pienaar hits a shot which takes a small defection and its in the back of the net. Everyone goes crazy jumping about but very carefully on the upper tier. I made it 58 minutes another 32 minutes to go. The best chances Spurs have, seem to come from free kicks or corners. Bentley free kicks are disappointing not even hitting the target. They bring on a couple of subs but seem to lack that cutting edge that will bring them the equaliser.

Everton are knocking the ball around and they do not seem in serious trouble then Saha is injured! No Vaughn, no Yak and now no Saha. Victor comes on and makes an impact. He has two glorious chances to score and puts the ball wide both times. Spurs can't make an impact and we win. Can't quite believe it, surely this isn't possible. We go out singing the Everton Christmas song.

Final thoughts just love going to White Hart Lane. We have to play 4-5-1 and Pienaar is so important to the balance of the team.
