MATCH REPORT

Man City 0 v 1 Everton

By Tom Carr

What’s That Skippy …….. We’ve Won Away Again ?

Collected the mini bus from Pompey on a cold and wet rainy Saturday morning to be given the brief that everyone should wear their seat belts and no alcohol on the bus and much to my surprise the lads were happy with these arrangements and settled down for the first part of the journey along the M27. Picked up a drenched ‘Nice Phil’ from junction 8 who quickly settled into his seat, belted up and safe.

Eddie was in the festive spirit and had decorated our carriage with coloured paper chains and tinsel to encourage the festive mood. The Southampton Blues were on time and waiting as we made our way on the long journey north although one final collection of Paul at East Ilsley before steering the carriage north which was achieved in reasonable time.

First stop at the Swan, well the lads were thirsty having obeying the bus rules bless em before arriving at Eastlands to be me by a large sea urchin outside the grounds. Inside the Evertonians were warming to the City fans with ‘ Shit Ground No Fans’ highlighting the packed away section and the gaps in the home. So onto the game ….

Both the sides played an attacking brand of football. There was not much to choose between the two sides as they fought equally. The toffeemen were quickest off the block with a fine free kick from Mickel, which crashed off the underside of the bar to rebound to Fellaini who headed in a looping style only to hit the top of the bar.

The impressive Stephen Ireland sailed a shot over the Everton goal and in the next minute City were once again on the attack, this time Brazil star Robinho’s shot from the edge of the box was saved by Toffees keeper Tim Howard.

Everton were denied a penalty when former Blues defender Ball pulled Little Ossie back but the lineman bottled the decision. City keeper Joe Hart was impressive with some smart saves from Arteta and Fellaini who looked like he was certain to score.

In the second half the Blues showed signs of frustration of being unable to break the deadlock keeping Man City on the back foot throughout the match. Wright-Phillips made a great run into the Toffees defence in the 62nd minute from the right flank however he was thwarted before any damage could be done.

When it looked like the match was heading for a draw Everton came up with a stunning goal in the injury time when Tim Cahill rose high up in the air above Richards to head home a corner by Osman.

The away support were now in great voice sending the Manc’s home with ‘jingle bells … O what fun it is to see Everton win away’ only to receive a barrage of bottles, coins and other materials thrown into the away support. Lads this is not what does giving in the festive season mean!!

The ride home was joyous with the red wine club in full swing and with a couple of stops on the way continuing the festive cheer a great day was had by all.

Merry Christmas and God Bless Us …Everyone!!
